Tier 3 schematics allow you to craft some of the most powerful weapons, armor and arms/legs upgrades in the game, but actually finding them can be quite a chore. Considering that many of these schematics are random drops, it is difficult to find more than a couple in a typical playthrough. This guide is going to assume you know nothing at all about crafting, and build you up from the basics to advanced details about what is what, and how to put together a Masterwork equipment!

You can have 'Encore' which has upgrade slots, but 'Lyrium-Infused Staff' does not. Instead, with Weapons, you can tell by the base stats. Once you have a schematic you want, it’s time to hit the blacksmith area. Four benches: Craft Armor, Craft Weapons and Modify Armor, to Modify Weapons. At the crafting stations, you’ll fill in the material slots with items you’ve scavenged and gathered in your journeys.

Each slot in the schematic represents a type of improvement to stats like Offence and Defense. Using metals, leathers, and cloth bring a wide variety of stat improvements based on the type of armor or weapon, that can boost for example your maximum health or critical hit chance.

Want to take it a step further? Insert a Masterwork material for an added bonus effects. Once your piece is crafted, runes are also a great way to add even more damage! Even if you don’t use a masterwork material or have runes to apply, you’re still likely to have access to upgrade schematics for your weapons and armor. Handles for your weapons and arm guards can also be crafted at the stations for your armor sets and weapons to provide more ways to customize and add more power to your gear!

The best items to use often differ from situation to situation, adding some extra depth, variety, and fun to an all too often monotonous gameplay mechanic.

To upgrade your weapons and armor, you must first gain access to the Craftmanship talent. You can purchase the talent under the 'Character Development' window. If you'd rather spend the points elsewhere, specific items and clothing in Greedfall grant access to the skill. Once you locate the requisite gear, simply equip it whenever you want to upgrade. Next, pay a visit to a blacksmith in the larger settlements or use the workbench at any of your residences or camps to bring up the crafting menu.

When visiting the blacksmith or workbench, select the item you wish to upgrade. Items that you can enhance will have up to three available upgrade slots as indicated by the 'Crafting' column on the inventory screen. These upgrades function in an identical fashion to Dragon Age: Inquisition, with each slot altering a specific aspect of the weapon or armor piece's appearance and stat bonuses. Certain upgrades even give you access to Talents without forcing you to spend any of your points.

Unlocking some upgrades requires a higher level of Craftmanship. All crafting consumes a set amount of resources which you can gather on your travels or, in certain cases, purchase from merchants. Also bear in mind that weapons and armor require specific skills, stats, and attributes to use. As certain crafting ingredients can be hard to come by, make sure you can equip an item before upgrading it.
